small thoughts BIG IDEAS…Singapore Design Festival

by Adam Craft

I had the opportunity to attend the “small thoughts BIG IDEAS” exhibition in Singapore this week. I found it to be a great showcase of what a few talented designers can do when they break free from their day-to-day professions and let themselves create products on their own terms. These designers formed ‘The Little Thoughts Group’ which is a collective of Singaporean designers who wish to create awareness of design and inspire people to think of their own big ideas.

Acoustic Robot by Tan Lun Cheak

Acoustic Robot by Tan Lun Cheak > This standalone iPod speaker system is titled Acoustic Robot and it was designed by Tan Lun Cheak. The metal butterfly nut on the top of the speakers is actually the volume control which is nice quirky touch. The storyboard behind the product tells of a viscous battle between the designer and a robot. The designer won and ripped off the robots head and turned it into a speaker.

SugarBloom by Lee Yun Qin

SugarBloom by Lee Yun Qin > These sugar sticks represent a bouquet of flowers. The design intent is that you will use less sugar because you do not want to disturb your beautiful table piece.

Weed by Celia Law

Weed by Celia Law > This clever design is a calendar that plays to your olfactory senses. As you remove the “weeds” from the base the smell the season is emitted. Each day brings you closer and closer to a new season and a new smell.

APOE – A Piece of Earth by Len Lim & Yang Tah Ching

APOE – A Piece of Earth by Len Lim & Yang Tah Ching > The designers wanted to create a piece of furniture that allows the user to be in touch with nature while appreciating the outdoors.

Cock-Cock-Kay / 升官鸡 by Ng Pei Kang
Cock-Cock-Kay / 升官鸡
by Ng Pei Kang > The designer writes, “According to Chinese belief, the rooster is an auspicious animal that can ward off bad omens. My intention is to have something uplifting and I was naturally drawn to the rooster, also ‘Cock-Cock-Kay’ in local slang.” The magic of this design lies in the fact that when light hits the Cock-Cock-Kay in the morning the magnetic red ball rolls up the product and when it reaches the top it sounds out a piercing crow. Just in case you are wondering, yes this really works. The magnetic ball rolls magically up the product when the light hits it. It is pretty genius if you ask me!

Heart in Art by Jeremy Sun

Heart in Art by Jeremy Sun > What makes this set of drawers unique is that they only have one magnetic handle piece that acts as a key to open all of the drawers. By eliminating the hardware on the product the designer was left free to play with the artistic 2d details.

The Rocking by Leonard Tan Bahroocha

The Rocking by Leonard Tan Bahroocha > “Rocking animals have always brought interest to children but the designs of these products have not evolved much over the years to fit into contemporary living environments. The use of clean aesthetics in controlled curves and forms combined with the use of modern material and manufacturing allows these products to address this space of the market. The Rocking is a series of 3 animal explorations; My Rocking Pony, My Rocking Croc and My Rocking Elephant.”
