Modern Design Sighting

by Adam Craft

I took an old ferry from Thailand to the small island of Koh Samui, 50 miles off the coast. While on the old rusty ship, I noticed several rows of chairs that appeared to be Eames Shell chairs. The chairs were fastened to a metal base which had been welded securely to the deck. There’s no telling if the chairs were in fact authentic Eames chairs, but the one thing that is certain is that they have lasted the test of time. The ship was build in the 1960’s and 40 something years later the chairs are still sturdy, they have maintained a nice color, and they don’t look like they will need to be replaced any time soon. Good design that lasts…now that’s inspiring.

What a randomly great place to find some good design. The chair looks familiar. I recently restored an Eames piece that looks almost identical. http://redoretro.com/?p=13

No need to be envious… just go on Craigslist and find a chair of your own to restore. Check back soon, i just finished a bentwood piece that I will be posting.

I look forward to hearing what you find next in your travels!!!
